About Us

about_fmes_photo_schoolfrontThe Franciscan Montessori Earth School has been on the leading edge of Montessori education since 1977.  As an accredited pre-K through grade 8 Catholic Montessori school, we serve children ages 2 ½ to 14 from the greater Portland-Vancouver area.

The Earth School’s Montessori curriculum is individualized, multi-aged and thoughtfully guided to match each student’s needs. The staff respects each student’s learning style and academic, spiritual, emotional and physical needs. We know we are successful when we see a confident student, ready to explore, creatively problem solve and express concern for others.

The Earth School is operated by the Franciscan Sisters of the Eucharist www.fsecommunity.org. Our integrated curriculum spans the formative years and is based on the academic and experiential learning process developed by Dr. Maria Montessori and on the spirituality of St. Francis. Here, with gradually increasing independence, children learn to care for and respect themselves, others, and the Earth. Our students are guided to learn about their world, first in their own classroom gardens and eventually through overnight Earth Experience trips and even foreign exchange programs.

Mission Statement

about_fmes_photo_wholeschoolThe Franciscan Montessori Earth School / St. Francis Academy provides students from early childhood through young adolescence the skills to acquire individual fulfillment, academic excellence, moral and spiritual development, confidence and independence for lifelong learning. Through the academic and experiential learning process developed by Maria Montessori, and influenced by the spirituality of St. Francis, students are guided to respect themselves and others, and to be stewards of the earth.

Spirituality

Honoring parents as the primary source for the spiritual development of their children, the school provides as a support to families, the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd program (www.cgsusa.org). FMES/SFA is an independent Catholic Montessori school. Our Atrium Program uses Montessori methodology to create a working space for children where “the mystery of God can meet the mystery of the child.” Children enrolled in this elective instruction attend once each week for approximately two hours.
NOTICE: Each month a Catholic Mass will be offered in school. Times will vary.
